One of the most rare and beautiful natural features on earth is found on the Kona Coast of the Big Island of Hawaii- it is Kiholo Bay. Jet black lava flows from Mauna Loa and Hualalai surround a bay of the moat impossible turquoise color imaginable. Relatively unknown and not easily accessed for many years, visitors today can enjoy a short hike from the trailhead to the bay. Although the color of the bay can be very different from day to day, depending on sun and cloud conditions, it is most often an electric, striking blue turquoise. Set next to the other worldly appearance of the black lava flows, a visit to Kiholo Bay proves to be an unforgettable experience.
